MGM Collection’s Partnership with Marriott and BetMGM

In early 2024, Marriott International and MGM Resorts International are set to team up and dovetail their customer loyalty programs, enabling customers to benefit from a flexible connection using points from both major hospitality firms. The integrated approach will add 17 more resorts to the Bonvoy program, with locations including Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and Detroit, among others. BetMGM is one of the most successful casino brands out there, complementing the firm’s brick-and-mortar establishments with online betting platforms that serve multiple territories. This includes BetMGM’s online casino in Ontario where players in Canada’s most pro-betting province can take their pick from a wide variety of betting diversions. These include the thrill of streaming mixed with gaming at the live casino, where distractions include game shows such as Monopoly and Crazy Time, alongside table game classics that have stood the test of time. There’s also a dizzying array of slots and some NHL-themed games for Canadians who like to mingle the two popular pastimes. The casino has a sports section, too, making it easy to spread one’s betting wings while staying at the same online location.

Among the supported banking methods are PayPal (the world’s leading e-wallet), Apple Pay, and the Canadian-specific option of Interac e-Transfers. The deal between BetMGM and Marriott in 2024 is somewhat delayed as the integration seemed likely to occur in 2023 following a July announcement that year. The reasons for this postponement are not entirely known, although a significant cyber intrusion in September (against MGM) and labor disputes faced by the firm in various locations (including Las Vegas) may be partially to blame. Marriott’s Bonvoy program will thus be linked with BetMGM Rewards, and vice versa, so that Bonvoy members wishing to stay at MGM properties can spend their points to do so. These include some of the premier resorts in Las Vegas, such as the world-famous Bellagio Resort and Casino (past which the Las Vegas Grand Prix circuit runs on the Formula 1 calendar).

Under the terms of the deal, MGM will pay fees to Marriott based on room revenue generated as part of the shared loyalty schemes. MGM will also receive access to 180 million Bonvoy members, with members of the BetMGM Rewards program able to have their accounts linked to Bonvoy. Those who choose to do so will be able to receive ‘select member benefits’ and exchange their BetMGM points for Bonvoy points. The benefits for guests are significant, to the extent that many consider taking advantage of hotel programs such as Bonvoy makes hotels better value than rental alternatives. This is a substantial agreement in the hospitality sector as it brings together two of the best-known firms in a deal that is expected to last for decades. In the fourth quarter of 2023, MGM Resorts International reported consolidated net revenues of $4.4bn and net income of $313m. During the same period, Marriott saw reported net income come in at $848m, reflecting the scale of the two firms and the mutual benefits both can expect from cooperation regarding loyalty programs. Another reason this is a major agreement is that it replaces a previous arrangement that MGM had with Hyatt, another big beast in the hotel jungle. That older deal expired in September of 2023. Benefits from loyalty clubs are very much de rigueur among hospitality firms such as BetMGM and Marriott. The latter firm also offers the Marriott Rewards Premier Visa Credit Card which enables members to earn points when using the card, with higher rates of accumulation at participating Marriott locations and for directly spending on airline tickets, car rentals, and restaurants. The absence of foreign transaction fees makes it especially appealing to Canadian holidaymakers who might find themselves on either side of the border while on vacation at Marriott properties.
